Master Ni Haixia's core view of destiny: fate has never been the whole of a life.
He divided the forces that shape a life into three equally important dimensions.
What Zi Wei Dou Shu reveals is a person's innate chart pattern — the layout of the stars, the Five Elements Bureau and the main stars of the Life Palace, all set by the moment of birth. That is only one third of destiny: the background color of a life, not the whole picture.
Where you live — your city, your country, its feng shui — along with your family background and social structure, together forms the second dimension of destiny. The same chart born in different places can lead to worlds-apart circumstances.
Each person's will, mindset, choices and actions are the most active force for changing destiny. Master Ni stressed that understanding your chart is about living better, not waiting for fate to decide. Constantly improving yourself is the most powerful way to break out of your pattern.
"Destiny is not the whole of life; add geography and the human mind, and you have the whole."
— Ni Haixia
One of the most influential masters of Chinese medicine and metaphysics in the contemporary Chinese-speaking world
Founder of the Han Tang College of Chinese Medicine in the US · creator of two teaching systems, the Human Records and the Heavenly Records
Biography: Ni Haixia (1954–2012) was born in Taiwan. In his youth he studied under several renowned doctors of Chinese medicine, specializing in the Classical Formula school (the lineage of the Treatise on Cold Damage). In mid-life he moved to the United States to practice medicine and founded the Han Tang College of Chinese Medicine, where for more than twenty years he taught Chinese medicine and traditional metaphysics in a systematic way. He died of liver cancer in Taiwan on January 31, 2012, at the age of 58.
Teaching system: Master Ni distilled a lifetime of learning into two major series of public lectures. The Human Records cover the Great Compendium of Acupuncture, the Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica, the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic, the Treatise on Cold Damage and the Essentials from the Golden Cabinet — the "order of humankind", laying a complete path for the study of Chinese medicine. The Heavenly Records cover Zi Wei Dou Shu and the I Ching — the "order of heaven", the fruit of his systematic study of metaphysics. Together they form the most complete legacy Master Ni left to later generations.
Zi Wei stance: In Zi Wei Dou Shu, Master Ni clearly belongs to the Southern San He (Trine) school, holding that one should "take the Life Palace as the root, the Three Sides and Four Directions as the application, and the Four Transformations as the guiding thread." In the Heavenly Records course he said plainly: "flying stars (Four Transformations) bouncing back and forth is far too complicated — I don't do that; the great Way is utterly simple" — a stance that clearly sets him apart from the elaborate Flying Star school.
Scholarly approach: Master Ni opposed rote memorization of formulas, stressing "understanding principles over memorizing verses" and "verifiable logic over mystical occultism." This approach turned Zi Wei Dou Shu from a closed system passed secretly from master to disciple into a modern body of knowledge — systematic, verifiable and learnable.
Influence today: Master Ni's lecture videos circulate widely on Bilibili, YouTube and other major platforms, and a new generation of enthusiasts of destiny studies and Chinese medicine regards them as essential introductions. He was not only a bearer of the Zi Wei Dou Shu tradition but also one of the key figures who brought traditional destiny studies and Chinese medicine into the modern body of knowledge.
All readings on this platform are compiled from Master Ni's public Heavenly Records lectures, the Ming-dynasty edition of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu and classical texts of the San He school, and are offered for cultural reference and personal growth only. Master Ni himself has no commercial connection with this platform.
Master Ni always stressed that reading a chart starts with the Life Palace. Its main stars set a person's basic pattern and innate character, while the Three Sides — the Wealth, Career and Travel Palaces — define the arena where that person can put their talents to work. Only the four palaces together give the full picture of a life.
A hallmark of Master Ni's approach is the weight he gives to the opposite palace. Any palace without main stars must borrow the stars of its opposite palace to be read; opposite the Life Palace sits the Travel Palace, and the two constantly influence each other — a key point many beginners miss.
The stars are only the foundation; the Four Transformations (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji) are what decide whether fortune turns good or bad. The same star meeting Hua Lu or Hua Ji can set a life on completely different paths. As Master Ni often repeated: read a chart without the Four Transformations and you have read only half of it.
Master Ni divided a life into 12 Decade Periods of ten years each. He held that a person's circumstances differ completely from one Decade Period palace to the next. Only by knowing which Decade Period you are in, and which stars occupy that palace, can you truly grasp your current fortune.
